  1. Jeri Bergstrom

I think there will be only a few members here who own or have had personal use of a 3D printer, so I will tell you about my experience.

In 2015 I bought a 3D printer. It was an enormous amount of money ($850) and it was called, “Skriware.” What an immense and costly mistake. It never functioned and although the Swedish company attempted to help, nothing seemed to allow it to work. My husband is a trained engineer – the kind who likes to futz with stuff – you know, the kind who voids warranties, and he and our son (for whom this was to be a magnificent gift) could not get the darn thing to make anything. It ran, but it went nowhere. After months of concerted attempts, and back and forth with the maker, my son told me the sad fact that the unit was non-functioning, and in essence, a large expensive paperweight. (because he is his father’s son, he took the thing apart, and the last time I visited, I saw its fan being used as a boot drier.) Sigh.

Fast forward 4 years. Now, 3D printers – although not a-dime-a-dozen, are somewhat more reasonably priced, they function as designed, which is more advanced than back then, and they work much more readily.

The 3D printer available here is not much less dear than my outlay, yet its specifications are considerably better. The FlashForge 3D Printer is compatible with Windows, MacOS and Linux, and mine was not. This 3D printer is able to use a panoply of filaments, including metal and wood filled, while mine took a single type and size. This 3D printer has a modeling volume that is about the same size as mine, but the frame is alleged to be much more firm, essential for a solid build. Everything I have read about the FlashForge company is positive, and almost everything I’ve read about this particular printer is laudatory. It is said to make very high quality 3D prints, which is exactly what one wants.

I was burned, and I accept that. Perhaps I can help others to be very careful before taking on a similar unit of their own. In the meantime, I have several rolls of filament that I’d love to off-load. Maybe as a prize?
